Farmageddon Movie Night

imagesFarmageddon Friday, February 8, 2013 @ 6:00pm

Americans’ right to access fresh, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. The movie tells the story of small, family farmers providing safe, healthy foods to their communities who were forced to stop, often through violent action, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies. The movie succinctly poses and addresses the question “why is this happening in 21st century America?” Evoking both sympathy and anger for those farmers violently shut down by overzealous government policy and regulators, Farmageddon stresses the urgency of food freedom. Though the film deals with intense scenes and dramatic situations, the overall tone is optimistic, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods. Cheddar Cheese Gone Wrong

Remember this?

cheddar cheese sm

And this?

Making cheese

I was so excited to learn how to make these fabulous cheddar cheese’s last month before we dried off our cow. And I was overjoyed when I was able to get a wine cellar to age my cheeses in!!

_DSC0005

So you can probably imagine how bummed I was when our power went out a few weeks ago and my wine cellar stopped working properly. It took a couple days before I realized that it had frozen in there. Because it froze, there was a lot of moisture which became a great breeding ground, and all my cheeses (4 batches at the time) got a lot of nasty liquid trapped under the wax and then started to mold!

Of course I couldn’t give up, I cut off all the wax, wiped down my cheeses and then used a little apple cider vinegar to get the mold in order. Let them air dry (again) and re waxed. Since I am no pro at cheese making, I don’t know how these will all turn out now. But what do I have to lose by trying? If worse comes to worse, i will have to throw them out in a few months, but until then, I am hoping for the best!

We ordered the parts and fixed the wine cellar and also got a serge protector. We don’t want that happening again! ;)  Meanwhile, I only have one month left until Daisy calves and I will have plenty of milk to play with, and I do intend to play with it!! I have come to adore the world of culturing and can’t wait to have more opportunities to use it!

Happy New Year

2013_clock

As you are contemplating and making your New Years Resolutions, let me put an idea out there to consider. There is a great need in our area for good quality real food products. I get emails and phone calls often (as Chapter Leader for the Weston A. Price Foundation) asking for sources as people are becoming aware of the dilemma with our food system and as they desire to become healthier. Sickness and disease is showing up in younger and younger children. Parents are struggling to find answers to help heal their children and family members. The struggle I see popping up is the demand is rising, and the supply is very limited. I would like to encourage those who feel so inspired to rise up and join those of us trying to make a small difference in our food system and community. If you have land, or want land, we are in great need of small family farms that offer nutrient dense foods, even if only on a very small scale. If you have chickens, consider adding a few more to your flock, there is a huge demand for pastured organically raised antibiotic free soy and corn free chicken eggs. Most people live in a community with HOA’s and don’t have the option to have their own chickens yet. If you have a Jersey Cow and have extra milk, their are those looking for a Raw Jersey milk source that does not exist in our area, cow shares are a great idea. If you live in dirt, as most of us do, and want green to be able to raise animals that are properly fed as well as cut feed costs, I am in the process of proving that we can have green WITHOUT irrigation, using the seasons, healing the soil, and planting and getting it grown and established when it rains and before the heat hits. If you want to know more about how to do this without a huge water bill, talk to me!! Or come to our class http://davisfamilyorganicfarm.com/classes/ this month and find out how. If you need a source for good quality chicken feed, let me know, I will pass on info for a group in phoenix that we order with. It is the best price for fabulous feed that is hard to come by. If you have products and would like to be put in contact with those looking for your product, let me know. It can be as public or quiet as you like, just let me know what you want. I would love if we could as a community pull our resources together and start helping each other so we can all benefit and become stronger together. Looking forward to a Fabulous 2013!! Happy New Year everyone!!

Welcome Sofia!

14 Friday Sep 2012

Some good news! This past weekend we welcomed a new cow to our farm, Sofia! She is our 3rd milking cow and we are ecstatic to have her! The week proved a little more difficult than we had anticipated. Poor Sofia has never seen an electric fence, which is what we have our cows in right now. Each time she touched the fence, she would freak out and charge through the fence. After catching her (the first time was especially fun, since she didn’t know me and was scared to death) and fixing the fence a few times we decided to tie her up! It took a few days to train her, get her to trust us as we walked her around, but she is now running around free as a bird, happy as ever!

As you may have noticed, our Banner has changed!

The goal of Nourishing Real Food was to provide information about the use of whole, unrefined foods prepared according to traditional methods that optimize nutrient density. And that is still my goal, I have just added upon it! I have added my family and together we have created Davis Family Organic Farm! This is very exciting for us and our minds are racing with ideas, imagining all the possibilities!

We will be merging our two sites together. Please be patient with us as it may take a little while to get it all finished! Thank you to all of you that have been SO supportive! It means the world to be associating with such great quality of people!!

Change

29 Thursday Mar 2012

Wikipedia says change is the process of becoming different.

Merriam-webster.com defines change as:

1. a. to make different in some particular way b. to make radically different c. to give a different position, course, or direction to

2. a. to replace with another b. to make a shift from one to another c. to undergo a modification of

This is what I feel. Change.

This last week has been a drastic one. One I didn’t think I would have for a long while. I know what I wanted, and I know what I needed to do. I was just a little surprised with how soon it actually worked out! Honestly it still feels unreal!
